Flashback: I Am Offended

In anticipation of the shutdown of Apple’s MobileMe service, I am re-posting some of my old blog entries before they become harder to retrieve.

The below was not actually a blog entry but instead, it was an email that I sent to Thomas Carder of CAPAlert on July 13, 1999. It, too, will become harder to retrieve once the service is shut down.

Subject: I am offended

Dear sir or madam:
I am writing to you because I found the content of your CAP Reports to be extremely offensive and insulting. I find it bothersome and annoying that you seem to take yourself, your opinions, and your morality far more seriously than is befitting to any single individual or organization.

You have made it abundantly clear, through your reviews of the movies “South Park: Bigger, Bolder, and Uncut,” “American Pie,” and “Election” (as well as your Table of Contents page and a few other pages on your web site) that rational discourse with you is not possible because you have apparently been blinded by your religion. I am still willing to give you the benefit of doubt by writing this. I would not be surprised if this e-mail goes unanswered.

Please bear in mind that this country was founded on the concept of freedom of religion, as well as freedom of speech, so you clearly have the right to your opinions, and to present them. That much I am not disputing.

What I am disputing is the fact that you seem to have little regard for those who do not believe the same as you do. The concept of using religion to alienate and disenfranchise non-believers is certainly not new or unique, but the Internet has made it a thousand times easier to perpetuate this form of xenophobia.

It would not surprise me if your voice was heard first and most loudly following the tragedy a few months ago in Littleton, Colorado. Blame Hollywood! Blame the gun industry! Blame the news media! Have you not given any thought to the fact that your own opinions may have contributed to the anger that raged in those two boys? It does not matter whether the fact that they did not believe in a religion the same way you do came from their refusal or their inability to do so. The fact is, they did not believe the same way as you do. As the alienation at hands of groups such as yours progressed, so their anger increased.

The sweating of your souls cannot wash the blood from your hands.

This is not to say that there aren’t other groups that share in the guilt. Just know that they are not alone. It is simply unfortunate that a group such as yours that purports to uphold the teachings of Jesus is much more capable of perverting them than upholding them.
